Anacapri at a glance

Capri has two towns, and Anacapri is the second one. It is a separate municipality from Capri town, and several of the island's best-known sights lie inside its borders: Villa San Michele, the chairlift to Monte Solaro and the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra in Italian). Casa Rossa and the rocky bathing spots at Punta Carena are here too.

Most visitors arrive at Marina Grande. From there the funicular climbs to Capri town and the Piazzetta, and a bus runs on from Capri town to Anacapri. Once you are in Anacapri, the center is small enough to cover on foot.

Anacapri sights in detail

What each stop involves.

Monte Solaro

The chairlift runs from Anacapri to the summit. It operates through most of the year, with about 20 days of maintenance between January and February. From February to March and in November and December it runs 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the last ride down at 4:30 p.m. On Friday and Saturday evenings in June and July the operator extends the hours to 7:45 p.m. Eating and drinking during the ride is not allowed. Walking down takes about 1.5 hours.

Villa San Michele

The house and garden of Axel Munthe sit on Viale Axel Munthe in Anacapri, not in Capri town. The terrace views over the bay are the main draw. Winter hours differ from summer and the villa closes in February.

Casa Rossa

The red house was built between 1876 and 1899 for John Clay MacKowen and is now part of the state museums of Capri. The last entry is 15 minutes before closing. A combined ticket with Villa Jovis and the Certosa costs €12 and stays valid for 30 days.

Scala Fenicia

The old stairway has about 900 steps and links the harbor with the area of Villa San Michele. The villa's operator recommends good shoes and no heavy luggage. It is not a step-free alternative to the bus.

Punta Carena

The southwestern end of the island has rocky bathing spots and the bathing club Lido del Faro, with sea access and a pool. Ask the club about reservations before you travel: a bare spot on the shore cannot be booked on its own, and requests are confirmed by email. The red lighthouse stands on the rocks nearby.

Road to the Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto lies in the municipality of Anacapri. A bus or taxi takes you to the Grotta Azzurra stop, followed by a stairway to the water and a transfer into a rowboat. Estimates for the bus ride range from 10 to 15 minutes, and walking from Anacapri takes about 50 minutes. Entry to the museum site is €6. The rowboat is paid separately, at €12 to €13 depending on the source, and the Grotto closes when the sea is too rough.

Getting to and around Anacapri

The public bus operator ATC runs Capri town to Anacapri, plus links between Anacapri and both marinas. A single ticket is listed at about €2.40 to €2.50 in 2026, and sources disagree on the exact fare, so treat that as a range. Buying on board costs more. A day ticket exists, but its price differs by source.

Some lines to the lighthouse and the Blue Grotto are run by a different operator. Do not assume that a day ticket from one company is valid on the other's buses. The timetable changes with the season, so check the current one before you go.

Cars are restricted. From March 30 to November 2, 2026 and again from December 28, 2026 to January 3, 2027, non-resident cars, motorcycles and mopeds may not enter the island, rental vehicles and foreign plates included. A hotel booking alone is not listed as an exception.

Staying in Anacapri

A base for the villa and the chairlift.

Anacapri is the practical starting point for Villa San Michele and the Monte Solaro lift. If you arrive by ferry, you need a transfer up from Marina Grande either way. There is no general rule that Anacapri costs less or more than Capri town, so compare the rooms you are considering. Some places open only for part of the year, so confirm dates before you book. More on areas and prices is on the hotels page.

Anacapri: frequently asked questions

How do I get from Marina Grande to Anacapri?

Take the funicular up to Capri town, then the bus to Anacapri. Taxis also run between the harbor and the towns. Check the current bus timetable before you go.

Is Anacapri worth a half day?

Yes, if you pick two stops. Villa San Michele and the Monte Solaro chairlift are both in Anacapri, and Casa Rossa is a third option if you like museums.

Can I walk from Anacapri to the Blue Grotto?

Yes, a walk of about 50 minutes is described, followed by a stairway down to the water. A bus or taxi is faster. Entry depends on the sea conditions on the day.

Is there a ticket that covers all Anacapri sights?

No single ticket covers them. Villa San Michele, the chairlift and the clubs each charge their own prices. A museum combination of €12 covers Casa Rossa, Villa Jovis and the Certosa.

Can I use the Scala Fenicia with luggage?

It is not recommended. The stairway has about 900 steps, and the operator of Villa San Michele advises good shoes and no heavy luggage.
