Monte Solaro at a glance

Monte Solaro is reached by an open chairlift that starts in Anacapri, the island's second town. It is a chairlift, not a closed gondola, so the ride itself is part of the visit. At the top you find a terrace with deck chairs and a rocky plateau around it, with views over Capri and its hills.

The lift runs all year in principle. Eating and drinking during the ride is not allowed. Fares and hours below come from the lift operator and apply in 2026. Always check the operator's current page before you travel, because hours change with the season.

How to reach the lift

The lift station is in Anacapri, not at the port.

From Marina Grande

Ferries and hydrofoils arrive at Marina Grande. A funicular connects the port with Capri town and the Piazzetta. From there you continue to Anacapri.

Ferries from Naples →

From Capri town to Anacapri

A bus links Capri town and Anacapri. Check the current bus timetable on the day, because the island changes its schedule between seasons. Once you are in Anacapri you get around on foot.

Do not plan on a car

Under a regional decree of 25 March 2026, cars, motorbikes and mopeds of non-residents are banned from 30 March to 2 November 2026 and from 28 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. Rental vehicles and foreign plates are included. A hotel booking alone is not an exception.

Riding up and walking down

The cheapest plan is a return ticket for €15. If you want to walk down, buy the one-way ticket for €12 instead. Two one-way tickets cost €24, so they do not pay off against a return.

The operator gives about 1.5 hours for the walk down. Plan that time on top of your ride, wear shoes with grip and carry water. The last ride down leaves a little after the lift's closing time, but do not plan your day around that margin.

Weather decides the quality of the visit. Check the sky before you go up. A clear morning is the better bet, and the ride is worth less when clouds sit on the summit.

Combine it with Anacapri

Several sights lie in the same town, so one day works well.

Villa San Michele

Axel Munthe's house and garden in Anacapri. Adults pay €12 and young people and students €8 in 2026. Children under 12 enter free according to the operator. The building is not accessible for visitors with reduced mobility.

Casa Rossa

The red house was built between 1876 and 1899 for John Clay MacKowen and is run as a museum. The regular ticket is €5. Hours are 10:00–18:00 from May to September and 10:00–16:00 from October to April.

Scala Fenicia

About 900 steps link the port with the area of Villa San Michele. The operator advises good shoes and no heavy luggage. It is not an easy alternative to the bus.

Punta Carena

The lighthouse point at the western end of Anacapri has rock bathing and the Lido del Faro. See the beach guide for how it works.
