Giardini di Augusto and Via Krupp

The Gardens of Augustus, in Italian Giardini di Augusto, lie in Capri town a short walk from the Piazzetta. They are terraced gardens with flower beds and paths, and one of the viewpoints from which you see the Faraglioni rocks. The municipal portal sells the tickets.

Via Krupp is the hairpin road that drops from the gardens toward the sea. Treat it as a separate question from the gardens. The gardens are a normal ticketed visit. The road has had a closure reported and its status is unclear, so do not build your day around walking it. Details are in the section on Via Krupp below.

Via Krupp: what to know

Reports about Via Krupp conflict. One travel portal says the road is closed because of rockfall, while stating that it can generally open from May to October. Another travel site says it reopened on 1 April 2026. Ask locally or at the gate for the current status, and treat the road as possibly closed until you know.

Do not use Via Krupp as your only way down to Marina Piccola. The other routes are the bus or a taxi, or the footpath along Via Mulo. If you find the gate open, stay on the road and heed any warning signs. If it is closed, the gardens are still worth the visit.

How to walk to the gardens

No bus goes to the garden terraces. You walk from the Piazzetta along Via Vittorio Emanuele, then Via Federico Serena and Via Matteotti. Wear shoes that suit stairs and slopes, and allow time for photos at the viewpoints.

Combine the gardens with the walk to the Faraglioni viewpoints at Punta Tragara, or with a coffee on the Piazzetta. If you come off the ferry at Marina Grande, the funicular takes you up to the town first.

Planning your visit by season

The hours change a lot over the year. From 1 May to 15 September the gardens stay open until 20:00, which makes the late afternoon a good time for the view toward the Faraglioni. From 4 November to 31 December they close at 16:30, and in January too, so a winter visit has to happen before the early afternoon ends.

In the shoulder months the closing time moves between 17:00 and 19:30. Allow time to walk up from the Piazzetta before the last entry, which is 15 to 30 minutes before closing. If a private event limits access on your day, the garden may be closed to visitors even within the listed hours.

The ticket stays valid for 15 days, so you can buy it ahead and choose the day with the best weather. It is a small cost, and a visit pairs well with a coffee on the Piazzetta or the walk to the Faraglioni viewpoints.
